Extreme Proofs I: The Irrationality of √2

Mathematicians often ask, ``what is the best proof'' of something, and indeed Erd\"{o}s used to speak of ``Proofs from the Book,'' meaning, of course, God’s book. Aigner and Ziegler (1998) have attempted to reconstruct some of this Book. Here we take a different, and more tolerant approach.
